For many family offices, digital assets remain an asset class surrounded by both opportunity and uncertainty. While some investors have embraced crypto and blockchain technology, others remain cautious, deterred by volatility, regulatory questions and the high-profile failures that have shaped public perceptions of the sector.

Speaking on the AYU Network Podcast, Christophe Racine argued that regardless of whether a family office ultimately chooses to invest, understanding digital assets has become increasingly important for sophisticated investors.

Drawing on almost three decades in traditional finance, including roles in banking, asset management and Switzerland's SIX Digital Exchange (SDX), Christophe described digital assets as more than just cryptocurrencies. Instead, he sees them as part of a broader technological shift that is reshaping financial markets and investment infrastructure.

A key challenge is education.

Many investors still view digital assets as synonymous with Bitcoin, when in reality the market encompasses a much wider ecosystem, including blockchain infrastructure, tokenisation, staking and digital ownership.

> "Before making any investment decision, family offices should take the time to understand both the technology and the role digital assets could play within a portfolio."

 Christophe Racine,

Head of the DACH Region at 3iQ

Many investors still view digital assets as synonymous with Bitcoin, when in reality the market encompasses a much wider ecosystem, including blockchain infrastructure, tokenisation, staking and digital ownership. Before making any investment decision, family offices should take the time to understand both the technology and the role digital assets could play within a portfolio.

Christophe also believes that digital assets should be considered through the lens of portfolio construction rather than in isolation. While volatility remains higher than in traditional asset classes, digital assets can provide diversification benefits when introduced thoughtfully as part of a broader strategic asset allocation. For family offices focused on preserving and growing wealth across generations, understanding these characteristics is becoming increasingly relevant.

The conversation also explored the evolution of institutional investment solutions. While early crypto adoption often centred on simply buying and holding Bitcoin, investors now have access to a growing range of products, from ETFs and actively managed funds to market-neutral strategies designed to generate returns independently of broader market movements.

Addressing concerns stemming from events such as the collapse of FTX, Christophe emphasised the importance of institutional-grade infrastructure and governance. Professional custody, transparent oversight and rigorous operational controls have become critical requirements for institutions considering exposure to the asset class.

Looking ahead, Christophe sees institutional adoption continuing to accelerate. Banks, wealth managers and even pension funds are increasingly engaging with digital assets, while regulatory developments are providing greater clarity and confidence for investors.
